BioPak x Bean Squeeze

Everything we do here is guided by our philosophy of leave happier. Whether it's your morning coffee (just the way you like it), or any of our handmade food items, we're that little hit of happiness as you move through your day.

So, just like our coffee and food products, when it came to sourcing our cups and food packaging, we wanted to use the best. Packaging that's going to leave our planet happier. After careful consideration, we partnered with leading Australian packaging business, BioPak.

We have huge amounts of respect for BioPak's approach. They design and manufacture food service packaging from rapidly renewable, plant-based materials that can be diverted from landfill and supports the move towards a circular economy.

It was 10 years ago when BioPak recognised the growing environmental problem of plastic in our oceans and set out to challenge the status quo.

For us, decreasing the impact our business has on our oceans and the environment is an ongoing priority. We’re not afraid to change something if there’s improvements we can make in doing so, and have done just that with our switch from using plastic to paper straws in March, 2018. When we saw the statistics around single use plastic straws, it was simply a no brainer.

In short, plastic straws suck! (pun absolutely intended). 'Every plastic straw used takes over 200 years to decompose, is not recyclable and among the top 10 debris items globally. Currently, 10 million plastic straws are used in Australia, every day.'

We’re just getting started, and we’ll never stop seeking to learn more, so we can do better. If you want to read further about the BioPak products we use at Bean Squeeze stores, please check our FAQs.

 Cup Drop - Composting Initiative

As of August 10, 2018 we are testing a new cup drop and composting service at our Torquay Rd store.

Any empty Bean Squeeze cup that’s returned will be collected and composted.

Composting is nature’s way of recycling – it’s a circular system where waste becomes food. There’s no separation required either, cups and lids go in one organics bin and once they reach the composting facility, break down within a week or two.

This service, a partnership between BioPak and Corio Waste Management sees tonnes of organics waste from Geelong and Melbourne businesses transported weekly to Western Composting Tech’s Shepparton facility for processing.

We hope to roll this initiative out to all Bean Squeeze stores in coming months.
